“WeRunMPLSer of the Month” is a series we write to introduce the faces that make WeRunMPLS so special. We say this a lot – our core is community; it was the motivation behind starting WeRunMPLS, is the foundation for every time we meet and is what guides all our decisions. Hope you enjoy!

This month, meet Meredith! Meredith is a core part of our group, up for a good beer, ready to let us know when things get a little "too spicy" and is always ready to dive in head first whether that means going for a run, hanging out with the group or hosting people at her home. And, it's extra special that she's our May WeRunMPLSer because her 30th birthday is May 1! So scroll on to learn more about her + make sure to show up to one of our events to meet her in person (and wish her a happy birthday!).

Tell us your name + how you found out about WeRunMPLS.

I’m Meredith Schultz (or “Mereschu” to these cool cats). I found WeRunMPLS through Nate Swanson’s Twitter and Instagram. I had just moved to Minneapolis and was looking for a new running crew. So I showed up for a Saturday long run and the rest is history.

Where is your favorite place to run?

The National Mall in Washington, DC. Watching the sun rise over the monuments is truly cinematic.

What’s been your favorite night of WeRunMPLS (so far!)?

Winning trivia at Modist was pure elation, but overall I’d have to say WeRunMPLS Prom at Italian Eatery. Even though we spend plenty of time eating together, there’s something magical about dressing up, uncorking a fine wine, and laughing late into the evening. The dancing was also better than my high school prom, although that’s probably not saying much.

Tell us your top 5 interests.

  1. Church life: I’m part of a small congregation in Uptown and when I’m not working or with family, you can probably find me with my church community.

  2. BBC’s Masterpiece Theatre: Poldark, Victoria, Downton Abbey, Mr. Selfridges, Grantchester, Call the Midwife, and of course classics like North and South and Wives and Daughters (and Netflix totally knocked The Crown out of the park). I think I was born about 80 years after my time, but I’m slowly adjusting to life in the 21st century.

  3. Craft beer: I’m the girl who orders a Belgian at a cocktail bar. Currently crushing on Utepils Brewing in the Harrison neighborhood of Minneapolis.

  4. Hospitality: Nothing better than a dozen people eating chili and talking philosophy around my dining room table. I enjoy the whole process, from making the grocery list to putting away the last dish.

  5. Family: This past summer, I moved back home to Minnesota (from Washington, DC) to be closer to my family. After 11 years away, I’m grateful for the opportunity to do everyday life with the people I love again.

What’s your favorite thing about WeRunMPLS?

Among many other things, I appreciate that all paces are welcome. You don’t have to have the fleetest feet to be an integral part of the WeRunMPLS community.

Favorite running quote?

“I believe God made me for a purpose, for China, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.” –Chariots of Fire (1981)
This quote comes from my favorite movie of all time, Chariots of Fire, about the stories of Olympic runners Harold Abrams and Eric Liddell. In this scene, Eric’s sister is trying to persuade him to return to the mission field instead of pursuing an Olympic medal. I think it speaks to the deep satisfaction we feel when we’re doing the work we were created to do.

One random fact everyone should know about you.

I’ve been to Guatemala 12 times, once for five months. My family has been deeply involved in surgical relief and community development efforts in underserved areas of the country since 1987. Those experiences had a big influence on me growing up, and changed my perspective on what was really permanent and important in life.

I also turn 30 on May 1st and I’m pretty excited to start a new decade in this beautiful city.
